CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT

For individuals recovering from a concussion, treatment plans are designed to help with the common side effects. The most common side effects from a concussion include headaches, neck pain, dizziness and balance problems. In addition to therapy, rest is necessary, followed by a gradual return to previous activities to achieve a full recovery of normal brain function.

For athletes, baseline information is collected regarding balance function using various tests for comparison, if needed, following a concussion. This information assists our therapists in determining when an athlete is safe to resume sports participation.

MHSAA Concussion Policy

MHSAA Concussion Policy:

  • An athlete who reports or displays any symptoms or signs of a concussion in a practice or game setting should be removed immediately from the practice or game. The athlete should not be allowed to return to the practice or game for the remainder of the day regardless of whether the athlete appears or states that he/she is normal.
  • The athlete should be evaluated by a licensed, qualified medical professional working within their scope of practice as soon as can be practically arranged.
  • If an athlete has sustained a concussion, the athlete should be referred to a licensed physician preferably one with experience in managing sports concussion injuries.
  • The athlete who has been diagnosed with a concussion should be returned to play only after full recovery and clearance by a physician. Recovery from a concussion, regardless of loss on consciousness, usually take 7-14 days after resolution of all symptoms.
  • Return to play after a concussion should be gradual and follow a progressive return to competition. An athlete should not return to a competitive game before demonstrating that he/she has no symptoms in a full supervised practice.
  • Athletes should not continue to practice or return to play while still having symptoms of a concussion. Sustaining an impact to the head while recovering from a concussion may cause Second Impact Syndrome, a catastrophic neurological brain injury.

Remember, it is better to miss one game than to miss the whole season.

PRE-INJURY TESTING

For athletes, baseline information is collected regarding balance function using various tests for comparison, if needed, following a concussion. This information assists our therapists in determining when an athlete is safe to resume sports participation.

Employer Services

Industrial Rehabilitation Solutions for a
Safer Workforce with North Bay Physical Therapy

At North Bay Physical Therapy we have a therapy program that takes a unique approach to workers’ compensation claims. We will build an  industrial-strength program to meet the needs of the workplace. For more information on industrial rehabilitation, please contact us at 228.385.9000.

Work Conditioning

This is the initial step in returning to work. The work conditioning programs we provide at North Bay Physical Therapy are designed to increase strength and improve an individual’s physical condition. Sessions can last 1-2 hours a day 2-3 times a week.

Pre-Employment Screenings

Our pre-employment testing services use ADA-compliant protocols to assure a worker can perform the essential job functions of a given occupation. If the worker has pre-existing conditions or is not fit to appropriately perform the work required of the job, the employer will be notified. These tests can reduce both fraudulent claims and the frequency of workplace injuries.

Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE)

Functional Capacity Evaluations are used to determine an individual’s tolerance and functional abilities to perform a variety of work activities. These broad assessments help our therapists compare an individual’s health status and functional abilities to the demands of their job and work environment. FCEs can also assist in identifying any limitations or obstacles that might delay the return to work process.

Balance Rehab

Regain Stability and Confidence with Balance Rehab
at North Bay Physical Therapy

Individuals having problems related to dizziness and balance will likely benefit from Balance Therapy. Treatments may involve manual therapy and exercise-based therapy to help improve the vestibular balance system, while other exercises may be needed to improve balance control and reduce the risk of falling.

The aging population is at higher risk for balance control and falling. This often leads to difficulty in the simplest daily movements. At North Bay Physical Therapy, our therapists design customized programs to address each patient’s specific needs relating to:

  • Vertigo
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Muscle weakness
  • Arthritis
  • Fear of falling

With Balance Therapy, we offer Concussion Management and Balance Assessments

Balance Assesments

Balance disorders are one of the most common diagnoses for hospital admission in individuals over 65 years of age. If any of the vision, inner ear, or muscular systems in the body are not working properly, imbalance can occur. Our physical therapists have the tools and training to accurately identify the source of imbalance/vertigo as well as develop a customized rehab program to treat patients with balance issues and resolve their symptoms.

Blood Flow Restriction

Maximize Gains Safely: Discover the Benefits of Blood Flow Restriction Training at North Bay Therapy

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) therapy, a cutting-edge training technique offered at North Bay Physical Therapy, is designed to optimize workouts and rehabilitation by strategically restricting blood flow to specific muscle groups. This innovative method utilizes specialized cuffs or bands placed around the limbs—typically arms or legs—during low-impact exercises. These cuffs apply controlled pressure, partially reducing blood circulation by restricting venous flow while allowing arterial flow, inducing a unique physiological response.

At North Bay Therapy, our specialized approach to Blood Flow Restriction Therapy involves expert therapists applying customized compression devices at precise pressure levels. This tailored methodology fosters muscle cell growth, prevents muscle deterioration, and enhances aerobic capacity. Experience these benefits and elevate your training regimen with our personalized BFR therapy approach today!

Dry Needling

Enhance Recovery and Relieve Pain
with Expert Dry Needling

Dry Needling can help reduce inflammation, decrease muscle tension, and ultimately relieve pain. A fine needle is placed into a muscular trigger point. Trigger points can make it painful to perform everyday activities and often radiate pain to other areas of the body. Once the needle is positioned, the muscle is able to contract and release.

This practice can help treat a number of ailments, including:
• Pain in the neck, back, hip or knee
• Muscle strains or spasms
• Sciatica
• Tendonitis
• Sports-related injuries
• Headaches and whiplash
• TMJ or facial pain
• Plantar Fasciitis

Shockwave Therapy

What is Shockwave?

unnamed (3)
unnamed (5)
unnamed (4)

When an injury occurs within your body, your body immediately implements its own healing mechanisms to help naturally repair and restore the tissue, bone, cells and other compromised areas affected by the injury.

When you experience chronic pain, your body is no longer recognizing that there is an injury to that area. As a result, it shuts down the healing process and no further relief is provided, leaving you in a constant state of pain.

The shockwave therapy provided by Shockwave Centers of America™ penetrates deep into your soft tissue, causing a microtrauma or new inflammatory condition to the treated area. This “new injury” triggers your body's natural healing response once again. The energy emitted into the area also causes the cells in the soft tissue to release certain bio-chemicals that intensify the body's natural healing process. These bio-chemicals allow for the building of an array of new microscopic blood vessels in the soft tissue.

The strong energy pulses that are applied to the affected area for short periods of time stimulates cells in the body that are responsible for bone and connective tissue healing. In many instances, shockwave therapy treatments have proven to be effective in cases where the human body has not been able to heal itself on its own.

What is Shockwave?

The practitioner carrying out the treatment will apply ultrasound gel to the injured area and then place the applicator to the area administering the ballistic waves (compressed air impulses) over the affected area in a very slow, circular motion.

Most patients do experience a minor level of discomfort during the procedure, however, all measures will be taken to adjust the treatment to help manage any discomfort. Patients may also feel soreness in the area for a day or two afterward, similar to a strenuous workout.

Cupping

Cupping

Enhance Recovery and Relieve Pain
with Expert Cupping

Cupping therapy is an ancient healing practice used in physical rehabilitation to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and promote relaxation. This technique involves placing specialized cups on the skin to create a vacuum effect, drawing the skin and underlying tissues upward. By increasing blood flow to targeted areas, cupping helps to release muscle tension, enhance circulation, and accelerate the body's natural healing processes. Widely used in conjunction with other therapeutic methods, cupping can be an effective treatment for various musculoskeletal conditions and overall wellness.

LightForce® Therapy Lasers

deep-tissue-laser

Deep Tissue Laser Therapy™

Deep Tissue Laser Therapy™ is used to treat muscle pain and inflammation caused by acute and chronic conditions and post-activity recovery.

How it Works

Laser therapy is a medical treatment that uses focused light to stimulate a process called photobiomodulation (PBM). During PBM, photons enter the tissue and trigger a biological cascade of events that leads to an increase in cellular metabolism, which can decrease pain and inflammation and accelerate the healing process.

Non-Surgical – Prolong the need for some surgeries and help control pain and swelling as a pre and post surgery treatment.
Drug-Free – Manage your pain without the use and side effects of expensive prescription drugs.
Rapid Relief – Return to the activities you love faster when you experience fast acting pain relief.

Treatments

Laser therapy is used to treat acute and chronic conditions as well as post-activity recovery. When treating acute conditions with laser therapy, it is particularly effective when it is administered as soon as possible following injury. With chronic conditions, laser therapy is used most often to help combat persistent pain and inflammation. To aid in post-activity recovery, LightForce Lasers are used by over 250 pro, college, and Olympic sports teams across the United States and many parts of Europe and East Asia.

Plantar Fasciitis

Laser therapy treatments must be administered directly to skin, as clothing or topical dressings interfere with delivering light to tissues beneath the skin. Patients will feel a soothing warmth as the therapy is administered.

Many patients receiving LightForce® Therapy Laser treatments report enjoying the experience, especially when the massage ball treatment head is used to deliver what is often referred to as a “laser massage.” Patients receiving treatments with higher-power lasers also frequently report a rapid decrease in pain. For someone suffering from chronic pain, this effect can be particularly pronounced.

With LightForce® lasers, treatments are quick, usually 4-7 minutes, depending on the size, depth, and chronicity of the condition being treated. High-power lasers are able to deliver a lot of energy in a small amount of time, allowing therapeutic dosages to be achieved quickly.

Patients generally see results after 3 to 5 treatments. Clinicians will develop specific plans of care based on the diagnosis and the tissues that are involved. Chronic conditions often require more therapy than acute.
